is now every other year. this is a region of the united states -- sandy was a 900,000 mile wide storm. i had family commie from cleveland, they were feeling the winds of it as it was hitting. an area of the country that is easily home to one third of the entire population of the unite states. from washington d.c. all the way up to boston, massachusetts. think about that. when we talk about infrastructure and the power grid, local municipalities and services, transportation systems, coming down on amtrak this morning was probably the first week or two that we started seeing regular service. uninterrupted service on the new jersey transit and rail lines. because of the complete damage that was done. we have to look at those areas as well. this is a very passionate, i am sure you couldn't tell, to me. it is very passionate to us on the ground in new jersey. we certainly want to be partners. but we just want to get going. we are just waiting for someone over there to say, go. and here are some resources to help you go. that is where we stand on the jersey shore. that is where we stand in our

as republicans here. i sort of feel like this is an effort at a bipartisan -- bipartisanship. i know sandy had to leave. we were talking about the ratings agencies and what debate. reading the executive management report from the ratings agency that also pointed to the congress that one of the reasons -- huge reason for the downgrade, they didn't feel that the congress had the political will to address the spending crisis that we are in either. so that was also a big part of the downgrade of our credit rating. now i think, you know, we are trying to exercise the political will to address our spending by having a budget which you can't really talk about appropriation bills and all of these kinds of things in my mind having this saddam continuing resolutions to fund the government forever is unsustainable. you need to pass a budget to begin with a foundation. >> mr. cole, i also talked to attorneys, our attorneys, some other attorneys, not just on our staff and i tell them, talk to me like i can understand you. because they talk too much legal lease. i ask them, if i get a paycheck in my account
put it in the supplemental bill for sandy. and guess what? the house republicans stripped it out and didn't put it in their version of the sandy bill. so even today, after we know what happened, the republicans are still not willing to give her the resources to protect our diplomats abroad. >> senator, what was this hearing about today? was it about getting and finding solutions or something else? >> listen, to me, this was simply about politics, right, about two-thirds of the republicans that asked questions asked questions about a handful of tv appearances by susan rice. the fact is if republicans asked just a small percentage of the questions that they've been asking about these television appearances about the war in iraq, we wouldn't be talking about saving four lives, we would be talking about saving 4,000 lives. and so i'm glad she's being as transparent as she has been. but it's about time to focus on something bigger than this. >> senator, you have access to these intelligence materials. did you learn anything today? was there any new information that came out today? >>
because it was in the senate version of sandy and it was not put in to the senate -- the house version of sandy. so no, we cannot -- we cannot move money we already have to address the needs and deficiencies that the arb has recommends we do. >> well, i would just echo the comments that have been made already by this committee and by you that this is action that we need to get moving on immediately because we still have people at risk around the world. we need to take the action that's going to ensure their security. so i would certainly urge the chairman and ranking member to move the committee to do everything we can to make this happen. and i want to go back to something that the secretary sni said because i asked about the cooperation between the department of defense and state. and what the situation was on the ground before the benghazi attack in terms of the placement of our military in the region. he talked about the unprecedented cooperation between state and defense in response to benghazi. but i wonder if you could talk about how we ensure that this is a standard way of doin
